How to Host a Great Housewarming Party Right After Moving In

If you’re the entertaining type, chances are, you’re already thinking about the housewarming bash you’ll throw right after you move into your new home. But the trick to planning and hosting an awesome housewarming party is to keep it simple. From food and decor to entertainment and music, you can’t overdo it. Don’t worry if all of your belongings haven’t been unpacked yet. Your friends and family won’t mind: they just want to see your new digs.

What’s a Housewarming Party?

A housewarming party is essentially a get-together at a new home. Soon after you move in, you may invite your friends, family, and new neighbors to swing by, see the new place and mingle with the host. The term “housewarming” is derived from the need to literally warm up the new house. Guests would bring firewood for the fireplaces in an effort to create a protective, warm atmosphere.

Should You Throw a Housewarming Party?

Why not? You’ve worked hard to coordinate the move and now that it’s done, this is a great time to sit back, relax and throw a party. Plus, you are proud of your new home and understandably want to show it off. A bonus with housewarming parties is that they can also ease your moving blues. Feeling stressed or homesick? A party is the ideal way to keep your mind off of such a big change.

How to Host a Great Housewarming Party

Here are some helpful tips to make your get-together a successful one:

  • Don’t host during mealtime unless you plan to serve a meal. Best way to ruin a party in a snap is to invite over a bunch of hungry people. If you just want to offer snacks, say so on the invitation. If you want to offer cocktails too, put that on there as well. And if you wish to have a potluck, ask everyone to bring a simple dish.
  • Keep it simple. Nix the over-the-top decorations and don’t stress if your home isn’t in perfect order. Your guests fully understand you just moved in and don’t expect you to be the perfect host.
  • Set up a party area: Designate many areas throughout the home that guests can access, such as spots where they can leave their coats, fix themselves a drink, serve themselves some food, etc.
  • Play games. Whether it’s trivia about the new town or a board game, there are many fun and affordable ways to entertain your guests.
  • Limit the guest list. You will have to whittle down the guest list to keep overcrowding from happening in your brand new home. Limit it to a reasonable amount of guests so you don’t overextend yourself.

You’ve worked very hard to get to this place, so give yourself a pat on the back for all you have accomplished!
