Moving is tough and stressful, and you deserve a proper send off. Why not throw a moving-out party before you actually move so you can say goodbye to your friends and neighbors and let off a little steam in the process? Here’s how to throw a killer moving party:
Even if you’re hiring professional movers for the heavy stuff, it still helps to have close friends assist you with the small stuff. The more help you have, the lighter the load on everyone involved. Plus, you can entice with them with a party after to keep them well fed and hydrated!
Preparation is important. If you decide to hold a packing party before the actual party, make sure you trust the people you’re inviting. Beforehand, be sure to pack sensitive or private items yourself. Mark boxes fragile and label with the destination room and contents so you will be able to unpack later with ease. Clear a pathway in your home so your helpers and the movers will be able to navigate the area without tripping or getting confused.
Secure your pets so they don’t get underfoot, and hire a neighborhood teen to watch your kids during the process.
You’ll want to reward the friends who have helped you during the day, and invite others over who couldn’t make it during the first half of the day. Call the restaurant ahead of time to make sure they can accommodate an order of your size. Whether it’s pizza, pasta, burgers or Chinese food, you don’t want to run out!
Serve appetizers and place them strategically throughout the house and yard. Ask people to BYOB or serve them beer, water, wine, juice and other beverages in buckets or coolers with plenty of ice. Make sure there are games set up to play, such as cornhole, volleyball or horseshoes. Put on some music in the background to help everyone wind down from a busy day.
If you feel up to it, come up with a theme for your moving party and decorate around that theme. When thinking about food, consider finger goods for the easiest preparation and serving. You may also want to give out small gifts to your friends and family, such as framed photos of you all together.
Make it easy on yourself and use disposal plates, cups and utensil when throwing this party. You’ve likely already packed all the reach plates and forks anyway, plus you can just throw all the disposables away when done, with no mess to clean up.
