How far in advance should you book movers?

If you have no choice but to move for work, or the need to move came on suddenly, you may not have a whole lot of time to prepare for a relocation. However, if time is on your side, you have a bit more leeway when it comes to booking your movers. Knowing just how far in advance you should schedule them is the tricky part.

Here are some tips on booking your movers .

Check Your Calendar

Whether you have signed a rental or lease, or you have a closing date for a new home, find out what your estimated move-in date is so you can notify your movers. With a local move, it’s wise to book your movers at least two months before the big day. This will depend heavily on the time of year. Summer is the most popular time to move, so if this is your plan, you will want to book earlier than that.

For long-distance moves within the same state, book at least three months ahead. If moving out of state, book at least three to four months in advance.

And if you know you’re moving six months ahead of time, by all means, schedule your mover that far out. This will give you the best choice of times and days.

Why Should You Book Well in Advance?

For one, you’ll get more favorable rates when booking early. If you wait till the last minute, you may face higher prices because of the laws of supply and demand. Peak season is between April and September, which puts all movers in high demand – even more so in June, July and August. Summer is popular because kids are out of school. May and August are peak times for college kids moving out of and into their dorms. Keep in mind, you will pay more for weekend moves than if you were to book a weekday.

Another reason to book early is you will get your pick of dates and times, rather than waiting till the last minute and having to settle for whatever the company has left.

Moving Size Matters

While distance and dates are important considerations in booking, the size of your move plays a big role as well. Moving from a small one-bedroom apartment will cost you much less and require less advance planning than moving a five-bedroom house. You will also have to consider the amount of items as well as heavy items like furniture you need to take with you. Heavy and valuable items, such as pianos or art collections, will require more advance notice on the part of your movers, as they will have to make special arrangements to safely move those items.

Additional Moving Services

A basic move takes less time than one with specialty services required. Moves that involve lots of cumbersome items such as pianos and pool tables will obviously involve additional time and manpower. Disassembly and assembly will also take more time, as will the need for storage.

Other things out of your control can also impact your move, such as bad weather. Always incorporate some wiggle room into your timeline to account for delays like this.
